Maintaining SAP Certification PDF Print E-mail
Written by David Karina, Assoc. AIA, RCI, CSI, CDT
The passing of AB 38 in 2008 has merged the Governors Office of Emergency Services and the California Office of Homeland Security. Effective January 1, 2009 this new merger is now called the California Emergency Management Agency or Cal-EMA.

The first steering committee of Cal-EMA occurred January 8th in Sacramento. Among the agenda items discussed was the expiration of SAP Evaluator certifications. Safety Assessment Program certification is required to be renewed every five years.

The partnering organizations all agreed that they would on a semi-annual basis, send out reminders to SAP Evaluators listed with their organizations.

ACIA is asking SAP Evaluators to check their SAP identification cards for the expiration date.
Re-certification can be done easily online at www.oes.ca.gov > Recovery > Safety Assessment Program > SAP Evaluator Online Refresher Training.

Simply enter your name and SAP ID number and follow the directions as they appear on your screen. The average time is about 90 minutes. Your new card should arrive in approximately 2 – 4 weeks.

The Golden Guardian exercise last November and recent seismic activity throughout California gives validation to the fact that SAP Evaluators are a valuable resource in recovery following a major earthquake.

Please do your part by maintaining your certification, Someone’s life may depend on it.
