Everything You Wanted to Know!

  • Friday November 1: Everything You Wanted to Know About Working With Wood!

6 am Breakfast and Sign In

7am - 11am: Ameican Wood Council (AWC) presenting Engineered Wood Products: This course is an introduction to the ever-growing family of traditional and engineered wood products (EWP). Products covered are lumber, glued-laminated timber (glulam), cross-laminated timber, structural composite lumber, wood I-joists, and wood structural panels. The standards that form the basis for the manufacture and development of design stresses for each product are discussed as well as design provisions included in AWC's National Design Specification (NDS) for Wood Construction. Unique characteristics for each product are highlighted and extensive examples of the use of these products in a wide range of building applications are presented.

Ameican Wood Council (AWC) presenting Special Inspection for Wood Construction: The International Code Council’s (ICC) International Building Code (IBC) Chapter 17 is titled Structural Tests and Special Inspections. This presentation provides background on special inspections for wood construction in addition to discussion on related topics such as prefabricated wood components, special inspections for lateral resistance, and structural observation as it pertains to the 2012 and 2015 IBC.

Ameican Wood Council (AWC) presenting Connection Solutions for Wood-Frame Structure: This seminar presents current wood connection design philosophy, behavior, serviceability issues, and connection design techniques for small and large wood members, panel products, and wood assemblies, using dowel-type and specialized components. Glued connections will also be discussed along with a brief introduction to connection design software.

11am - 12am: Woodworks Wood Products Council presents Mass Timber Construction: Products, Performance and Design: Course Description Due to their high strength, dimensional stability and positive environmental performance, mass timber building products are quickly becoming materials of choice for sustainably-minded designers. This presentation will provide a detailed look at the variety of mass timber products available, including glue-laminated timber (glulam), cross laminated timber (CLT), nail laminated timber (NLT), heavy timber decking, and other engineered and composite systems. Applications for the use of these products under modern building codes will be discussed, and examples of their use in U.S. projects reviewed. Mass timber’s ability to act as both structure and exposed finish will also be highlighted, as will its performance as part of an assembly, considering design objectives related to structural performance, fire resistance, acoustics, and energy efficiency. Other topics will include detailing and construction best practices, lessons learned from completed projects and trends for the increased use of mass timber products in the future.

12am - 2pm: Luncheon and awards ceremony

2pm - 3pm: Woodworks Wood Products Council presents taking the Guesswork out of Mixed-Use Building Analysis: Course Description While mixed-use buildings—which combine multiple occupancy types and/or functions in a single structure—are common, determining how to apply their unique mix of code requirements can be a daunting task. To simplify code analysis associated with these buildings, this presentation covers logical, code-compliant steps for a number of topics, including determining allowable building size, separation needs, detailing requirements, and the application of special provisions. With an emphasis on the use of wood framing in Construction Types III, IV and V, examples, calculations, and details will be presented to demonstrate how to navigate the various code requirements associated with mixed-use buildings while maximizing building size and meeting fire and life safety needs.

3pm - 4pm: American Plywood Association (APA) presents Woodworks: Frame it Right! Back to Basics for Big Buildings: The demand for commercial and multifamily construction is soaring, and the framing industry is expanding to meet this demand. APA – The Engineered Wood Association has walked hundreds of job sites and identified the most common wood construction framing errors found in today’s nonresidential buildings. This session will examine the consequences of these framing mistakes from the ground up, providing practical solutions for avoiding typical issues using APA’s resources as a guide.
